NABS Nestbox Approval
Process
Building and Selling a better nestbox
Recognizing
the need for clear standards for bluebird nest box design as well as a
consumer education program to assist bluebirders with the installation of
the nest boxes, NABS established a bluebird nest box approval process. Many
retailers, manufacturers, and distributors have already received NABS'
approval of the nest boxes they sell or manufacture.
"Not all boxes are equal," says Kevin Berner, ornithologist at SUNY,
Cobleskill, NY. “Designs vary in their attractiveness to various species and
in their ability to protect their inhabitants from predators, inclement
weather, and introduced competitors. NABS has worked for years to identify
the nest box designs that are the most effective in successfully producing
young bluebirds.”
The nest box approval process includes an examination of the design,
materials, and dimensions of the boxes to better insure that they help, not
hinder bluebirds. Hole size, thickness of wood, and ventilation are among
the factors considered (see
Nestbox Approval Criteria). Additionally, the
manufacturers and retailers are expected to help spread the word about sound
bluebird conservation practices by including a NABS-created information
sheet "Getting Started with Bluebirds" and NABS brochure inside the nest
boxes. Approval recognition comes in the form of a label placed on the nest
box. Signs are available to retailers wishing to let customers know that
such boxes are available in their stores.
How to submit
bluebird nest boxes for review:
For manufacturers or retailers
interested in having their nest boxes reviewed, a sample nestbox can be sent to:
Nestbox Approval
Attn:
Bob Benson
118 Parker Terr.
No. Easton MA 02356
In
addition to mailing address please include as much contact information
as possible (phone numbers, email address, etc).
The process takes about four
weeks. The company will be notified regarding the decision and
supporting materials will be sent upon approval. There is no cost for
the nest box review, but retailers and manufacturers are expected to
make a commitment to bluebird education by agreeing to insert the NABS
information sheet and brochure inside each nest box.
All Bluebird nestboxes submitted without return postage
become the property of NABS, and will be placed on a Bluebird trail.
